color theory: we heart bright yellow

who doesn’t love the color of bright summer sunshine? we can’t help but smile when we see gorgeous yellow hues brightening up even the dreariest of days. in the midst of this very gray, albiet lovely, autumn, a bright swath of cheerful yellow is a surefire way to a great day.

yellow_mac_targetsweater_katespadetaxishoe_topshopleatherskirt_fossilbagMAC makes all of our favorite rich colors for eyes, lips, and face. their loose eye pigments are sooo much fun to play with- we are totally digging the perfect shade of Primary Yellow.

We love any fashion that reminds us of midcentury ladies who lunch; no better way of channeling our inner diva than with Banana Republic‘s luxe leather zip gloves in bright and fun yellow.

Kate Spade‘s sassy dangling stone earrings come in lots of pretty colors- these yellow lovelies are our faves.

Fossil is known for great basics with surprising pops of color or texture; their Sydney Satchel is a fabulous piece with a bright hue to update a tired wardrobe.

Vera Wang never disappoints- her Spring/Summer 2014 collection is a great mic of breezy fabrics, loose yet feminine silhouettes, and her signature black palette with bold pops of color, like this gorgeous dress.

TopShop‘s sassy lemon yellow leather pencil skirt begs to be worn for a sex Saturday night date. Throw on a semisheer black blouse, red lips, and booties and you are set to go!

Kate Spade channels her New York City roots with these whimsical and stunning Le Taxi peep toe pumps that are so beautiful we (almost) wouldn’t want to wear them. Almost.

Anna Faris was a vision at this years Emmy Awards ceremony, not afraid to turn heads in this bright yellow Monique Lhuillier  number.

Target is the place to go for great, cozy basics, all year round. their candy colored cardigans for fall are swoon-worthy- especially this cardigan that will look great with just about everything.

We love the girl power vibe of this classic print from World War II. Go Rosie!

color theory: we heart teal

one of our all-time favorite hues is back: teal! the perfect blend of blue and green, this rich, delectable hue is always a winner. it’s made a few appearances, accenting our wardrobes over the last few years, but this is the year of it’s true comeback. the color experts at Pantone named mykonos blue one of their favorites for fall, and designers’ fall/winter runway shows sparkled with an array of teal shades. full swing into autumn, we are seeing these blues and greens all over, from head to toe; from the runway to the shops and the streets.

why is it the perfect color, you ask? well, who doesn’t love a color that can be rocked by both guys and gals in an equally fabulous way? it can be edgy, girly, bold, sophisticated, or essentially anything in between. the rich jewel tone is flattering in any season, layered with other colors or simply a statement on its own.

we heart grandparents

are you lucky enough to have grandparents? if so, i hope you called them today to say “happy grandparent’s day”!!

i am lucky to say that i have an absolutely fabulous grandmother. my Gagie, or Fran, as she’s known to the rest of the world, has always been quite an inspiration to me; at 88, she is vivacious as ever. she lives independently, and doesn’t let mature age slow her down a bit. just try to stop her from going to pick up a pack of cigarettes, you will see what i mean!

i am always honored when someone tells me i look like her; what a sense of pride to know that i take after such a strong woman; she lived through the depression and world war II, raised a family, always worked hard (her doctor told her she finally needed to retire just a couple years back), and is always there when i want to grab a cup of coffee and kibitz about life.

here’s Gagie and her soul mate, my grandfather Walter, whom i was never lucky enough to meet. she always says, “I was married to your grandfather, and I never wanted to marry again.” this photo was taken in 1972.

and here she and i are together, on my birthday this year. she’s still fabulous!

we heart indie wed

if you have never heard of it, then you are really missing out! it’s a totally groovy wedding show for unique brides and grooms looking for something different, special, and local for the big day. we had a blast there on sunday, in our lovely vintage dressing room-inspired booth, with our black lacquer armoire draped with dozens of elegant veils, headpieces, and frivolities. we met some beautiful couples and some awesome fellow local wedding vendors as well! the next show is february 2014… hope to see you there!

we heart audrey hepburn

she was a beautiful, poised, elegant… and absolutely irresistible. she would have been 84 saturday, may 4. her presence and energy are still stunningly alive, not only in her films but in the example she set in her dedication to saving children through her work with UNICEF (

she was as kind as she was glamorous and beautiful, and that is the most fabulous thing of all!

as for her films, my favorites are Roman Holiday, Sabrina, My Fair Lady, and of course, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Can you imagine anyone else playing the feisty, fabulous, sexy, yet vulnerable Holly Golightly?

we heart awesome girl rockers

that’s a general rule for me, actually. more specific and more recent, though: i was invited to a concert last sunday with a couple of friends to check out an “amazing” singer at the groovy Schuba’s Tavern here in Chi-town. amazing doesn’t begin to describe it. said singer goes by the name LindiIMG_20130219_233246 Ortega, and she is unbelievable! great energy, beautiful music, and a killer voice- think Johnny Cash-meets-Patsy Cline-with a-Dolly Parton twang. seriously.

the best part- the adorable Lindi loves to sport cutesy feathered headpieces and such (thanks to my friend for letting me know that before the show), and i brought a little something to give to her! got the chance to say hi as she headed off the stage at the end of the show, and gave her one of my fave little feathered headpieces.

here’s a pic of the piece. how fabulous would it be if we see her sporting it one of these days!?IMG_20130210_233231
