romance wednesday: we heart Erica and Enrico’s garden wedding

what could be more beautiful than a garden wedding, bright with the sunshine and vibrant colors of summer? Erica and Enrico had just that for their July 2011 wedding. the lovely couple held their intimate ceremony in a beautiful church, where sunshine poured in and elegant old archways framed the exchange of vows.

a modern couple, the two went for a fresh, bright look. Enrico wore a regal purple jacket paired with a bright striped tie, a bold look  that he wore beautifully. Erica was a vision in a short, Grecian-inspired dress, with soft gathers and an asymmetrical neckline. opting for a short hem means, of course, that everyone gets to see the shoes! Erica pulled out all the stops and went for a dazzling pair of seafoam green satin heels, adorned with lavish crystal brooches at the toe. she decided to pull the green further into her look by designing a custom chapeau, adorned with feathers and a vintage crystal brooch, and a fabric rosette perfectly matched to her heels. a gorgeous hydrangea bouquet pulled in a bit more white and green, along with a hint of blue for subtle contrast (and her something blue, of course!). her look was elegant and stunning, and played perfectly against Enrico’s fresh, modern style. the couple’s cheerful energy and bright smiles matched perfectly to the elegant glamour of their big day.

around town: we heart Cafe Spiaggia

we are pretty sure most Chicagoans have a long list of their “must try” food places in the city. it is so satisfying to check one off of that list, and that’s just what we got to do this week! Cafe Spiaggia has been hailed as one of the finest Italian dining experiences in the city; we all know that a warm, filling Italian meal always hits the spot in the winter. and what more perfect a day to cozy up in one of their windows overlooking The Magnificent Mile than a blustery, slushy afternoon in January. we went for their prezzo fiso lunch- it seems to us that restaurants tend to put their most pride-worthy dishes on their fixed price menu, plus it takes the guesswork out of an overwhelming first time at a new place, so why not?

between two of us diners, we were able to try most of the dish options offered on the menu, which is great for sharers like us! both of the appetizers were absolutely delectable: the fresh and rich Mozzarella (apple mostarda, Sicilian sea salt, Spiaggia extra virgin olive oil) and our favorite of the two: the refreshing and sweet Rucola (arugula, pears, Capriole goat cheese, almonds, balsamico). the entrees were hearty, warm, and filling. we went for one of the pizzas: the cheesy, crusty and delicious Formaggi (some delicious white cheeses that we can’t quite recall, Treviso, balsamico), and one of the pastas, which turned out to be our favorite: the sweet, rich Cappellacci (butternut squash, brown butter, sage, chestnut honey).

everyone knows that dessert is easily the best part of the meal, and even though we were getting full (did we also mention the oh-so-tasty bread basket that they serve?) so we were so excited to try the Gelatis, which came in a variety of flavors; we went for classic chocolate (it was so rich and cocoa-y), the pumpkin (unique and subtle, and tasted great with the second of our two desserts- see below!), and our favorite, the caramel (rich, buttery, heavenly). their Zeppole was like nothing we had heard of before (to us, similar to a beignet: gingerbread mousse, orange marmalade, cinnamon) so we were intrigued by it. it did not disappoint. warm, soft little cinnamon sugar covered donuts, perched atop a smooth, subtle orange swirl, filled with a rich, delicious something that was out of this world. as we mentioned before, the pumpkin gelati complemented it perfectly.

it was one of the best meals had in some time. not to mention the atmosphere- lovely, warm, yet clean and fresh. and the service was great, too. all this while looking out over bustling Michigan Avenue and beautiful (albiet frozen) Lake Michigan- it doesn’t get much better than that!

romance thursday: we heart kris and scott’s sweet chicago wedding

you know when you just look at a couple and know that they are hopelessly in love? that was our first reaction when we saw the photos from Kris and Scott’s November 30, 2013 wedding. the lovely couple practically glowed as they embraced in the warmth of the intimate Sky Chapel at Chicago’s historical United Methodist Church in the heart of the city’s downtown. kris was oh-so-chic in her elegantly bejeweled A-line dress in soft layers of net, satin, and lace. scott was every bit the dashing and modern groom in his gray suit and striped necktie. the bride sported a fabulous fur jacket to keep the fall chill away, and her polished accessories included a custom Dreamy Rosette Headpiece that the bride customized with soft ostrich feathers for texture and whimsy.

the chic couple kept the wedding palette soft and neutral, with fabulous ivory lace-overlay dresses for the beautiful bridesmaids, and softly bright green and white bouquets. the cute couple held their reception at Chicago’s own cozily refined Osteria Via Stato, creating the perfect end to their romantic and beautiful day. kris_scott_wedding_chicago_headpiece_tullerosette_pearls_feathers

romance friday: we heart a romantic winter wedding

we love a winter wedding! refreshingly unexpected, a cold-weather wedding is a great opportunity to have fun with surprising silhouettes, layered textures, and of course the romance of dusky skies and softly glowing lights aplenty. grace and andrew did just that for their january wedding in the heart of downtown chicago. shades of whites, blues and silvers created the lineup of hues in the gorgeous ceremony and reception.

grace’s stunning gown featured a sweetheart neckline and dramatic ruffled skirts, and she kept away the cold with a gorgeous fur wrap. the piece de resistance was the gorgeous custom veil we designed with the bride, a cathedral length mantilla cut beauty trimmed in stunning lace; a delicate alencon scallop topped the piece, opening up into a wider lace at the hem, featuring a daintily detailed chantilly lace layered underneath a dramatic alencon edging.

the fabulous photographers from Life on Prints snapped the stunning photos from Grace and Andrew’s big day!

around town: we heart Bella Cafe

we all know how us Chicago folks love a good brunch spot, and we’ve had Cafe Bella on the list to try for some time now. we finally made it over there for a sunday brunch, and it was awesome! a great, modest little spot, it was the perfect balance of homey comfort, a modern and open space, and delicious food. the quaint Logan Square spot was bustling but low-key, and the service was fabulous. their cafe mocha was a delicious balance of coffee and chocolate, and equally as tasty was the generous spread of omelets, potatoes, and pancakes. fresh and perfectly cooked, the food was wonderfully uncomplicated, simple yet interesting. we might be a bit biased towards Cafe Bella because they also happened to have on a radio station that was playing some classic 90’s hits (The Cranberries, anyone?). they have a great sidewalk cafe, which of course will have to be experienced once spring returns to Chicago, but inside, the warm lighting, brick walls, and comfortable ambiance definitely put us in a cozy-up-to-the-fire spirit. stuffed after our meal, we didn’t get to try the delectable-looking pastries, but they are definitely on the menu for next time!

around town: we heart caramel brulee lattes

80956eb4815e44ad95704eb5eb95a98bwe didn’t think we could love Starbucks more than we already do. then they went ahead and introduced their holiday drinks for the season, and the Caramel Brulee Latte changed everything. have you tried it? we are completely smitten over it. definitely for the sweeter palette, and perfect for those of us who prefer “coffee beverages” to a full-on cup of coffee. if you love caramel, then this is perfect for you- not just a hint, but a full-on buttery richness that leads the entire flavor of the drink. this is a return item for them, but one that we didn’t get to try until this year, and we are glad we did! and of course we are also loving the return of their red holiday cups, a tradition that lets us know it’s that time of year! they are festive for 2013, with a pretty palette of reds, gold, and a bit of white in a whimsical and modern snowflake print that is sure to bring on smiles. cheers!
