local style: we heart howells and hood

IMG_20140219_022141there is nothing better than an evening in the heart of Chicago‘s downtown. bustling streets, bright lights, honking cabs… all of the magic of the big city. Howells and Hood has been on the map for close to a year now, and we finally got the chance to check it out. we love the location; nestled on Michigan Avenue, tucked into the base of the historic Tribune Tower. rumor also has it that their open patio is a divine spot for a romantic summer date… looking forward to testing it out in a few months!

but back to the food and drinks. it’s one of those menus where you just can’t decide, because literally everything sounds amazing. mac and cheese with pork belly? butternut squash risotto? ok, ok, it was just too much deliciousness to handle. luckily we were lucky enough to be visiting during our beloved Chicago Restaurant Weekwhich made deciding easy for us; don’t you just love the way they manage to pare it down to the perfectly edited selections to help you make your choice? and who doesn’t love appetizer/entree/dessert prix fixe magic?

where to start? one went with the butternut squash soup (simple yet tasty), and one went with the kale salad (flavorful, crunchy, and satisfying). for our entrees, one went with the pork tenderloin (sweet potato, brussels sprouts, cranberries, all a deliciously welcome addition to the tender, perfectly seared meat), and one went with the truffle lobster pot pie (as decadently delicious as it sounds). to end, it was hands down carrot cake for both (it was topped with a dollop of vanilla bean cheesecake, of course we had to get it). a great variety of flavors and textures, perfectly seasonal, and just inventive enough to keep us entertained. IMG_20140219_022345

and don’t even get us started on our favorite discovery of the evening, the amazing cider. it was Totally Roasted, a nutty, cinnamon-spiced cider that was apple goodness at its finest, from Vandermill Ciders. we are somewhat obsessed, and hope that the rest of the city catches onto our favorite new bev!IMG_20140219_022520
