happy new year! the lunar Chinese calendar’s new year (or Spring Festival, as it’s known) starts today, and marks the year of the horse in their zodiac system.

the celebration begins by a thorough house cleaning just before the first day of the new year, to clean out the old and to manifest luck in the new year. people are wearing red, giving gifts enclosed in red envelopes, and decorating and celebrating with red… it’s the color of luck for the Chinese, and this is the time to manifest a prosperous new year. on the eve, a big meal is served and fireworks are set off. parades and celebrations carry on for days, celebrating a new year and a new start to life.
