inspiration friday: we heart chinese new year

happy new year! the lunar Chinese calendar’s new year (or Spring Festival, as it’s known) starts today, and marks the year of the horse in their zodiac system.

the celebration begins by a thorough house cleaning just before the first day of the new year, to clean out the old and to manifest luck in the new year. people are wearing red, giving gifts enclosed in red envelopes, and decorating and celebrating with red… it’s the color of luck for the Chinese, and this is the time to manifest a prosperous new year. on the eve, a big meal is served and fireworks are set off. parades and celebrations carry on for days, celebrating a new year and a new start to life.

around town: we heart the red carpet at the Grammys

while the other awards shows are the chance to show off the classiest gowns and tuxes our Hollywood faves can get their hands on, the Grammy Awards are their chance to show off personal style and really make a statement. it’s our favorite show of the season for that very reason. we get to see the casual and the fancy, the low-key and the extravagant, the classic and the envelope-pushing. all in one night! who wouldn’t love it? check out some of our favorites from this year’s 56th Grammy Awards Show…

shimmer, sparkle, shine, oh my! there was plenty of it, too, including Judith Hill looking super chic in an elegantly natural updo and a scoopneck Shareen Vintage, Amber Rose glowed in sexy striped Naeem Khan (her arm candy, Wiz Khalifa, looked dapper in a YSL suit), and Taylor Swift, ever so poised in demure Gucci.

something blue… bright pops of blue in lots of pretty shades were all over the red carpet. Zendaya Coleman was oh-so-chic in flowing Tiffany blue and black  by Emanuel Ungaro, Anna Faris was a classic-meets-modern vision in flat-ironed locks and a gorgeous denim blue Fitriani gown, and Alicia Keys (who went home with the statue for Best R&B Albumwas glamour personified in open-necked Armani Prive.

the bold and the beautiful… bright and warm jewel tones rocked the red carpet, too. Gloria Estefan was pure elegance in blood red Gustavo Cadile, Pink glowed in fire engine red Johanna Johnson with only her sexy crop to accessorize, and red carpet host Giuliana Rancic was fierce in orange Alex Perry worn with a fabulous clutch.

black beauties… Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono were chic in black suits, accessorized with hats and glasses, Ariana Grande was a young starlet in flowing locks and sweet floral Dolce and Gabbana, and the diva of all divas, Madonna was bold in a Ralph Lauren suit, complete with top hat, cane, and a gold grill (plus her son in a matching suit and grill!).grammys2014_arianagrande_dolceandgabbana_seanlennon_yokoono_madonna_ralphlauren

simply fabulous: we heart seniors reenacting hollywood classics

a group of seniors at a retirement community in Germany recreated classic Hollywood movie moments for a 2014 calendar, and we are swooning over the beautiful results! ignoring modern beauty ideals, the individuals, many in their 80s, embraced their senior status and had fun with costumes, makeup, props, and the talent of a local photographer to create each scene. the photos are fabulous in their accuracy, and beautiful in their depiction of each individual’s natural beauty. it’s so refreshing to see that one can still feel beautiful, empowered, and alive at a mature age. we admire the irreverent attitude, glamour, romance, and unique style behind each of the photographs. check out our favorites below!Contilia Kalender 2014 - Senioren-Projekt - Klassiker

romance wednesday: we heart Erica and Enrico’s garden wedding

what could be more beautiful than a garden wedding, bright with the sunshine and vibrant colors of summer? Erica and Enrico had just that for their July 2011 wedding. the lovely couple held their intimate ceremony in a beautiful church, where sunshine poured in and elegant old archways framed the exchange of vows.

a modern couple, the two went for a fresh, bright look. Enrico wore a regal purple jacket paired with a bright striped tie, a bold look  that he wore beautifully. Erica was a vision in a short, Grecian-inspired dress, with soft gathers and an asymmetrical neckline. opting for a short hem means, of course, that everyone gets to see the shoes! Erica pulled out all the stops and went for a dazzling pair of seafoam green satin heels, adorned with lavish crystal brooches at the toe. she decided to pull the green further into her look by designing a custom chapeau, adorned with feathers and a vintage crystal brooch, and a fabric rosette perfectly matched to her heels. a gorgeous hydrangea bouquet pulled in a bit more white and green, along with a hint of blue for subtle contrast (and her something blue, of course!). her look was elegant and stunning, and played perfectly against Enrico’s fresh, modern style. the couple’s cheerful energy and bright smiles matched perfectly to the elegant glamour of their big day.

inspiration monday: we heart Martin Luther King Jr Day

dr_martin_luther_king_jrEquality, love, and peace are too rare a commodity in this world that we live in. thanks to the work and words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, the world is  a bit more equal, a bit more loving, and a bit more peaceful. he was an integral part of the 20th century’s Civil Rights Movement as a powerful speaker and strong leader, but most importantly as a man who believed in nonviolent protest. he was one of the few, especially in such a tumultuous time in our country and our world, who believed that peacefulness could lead to conflict resolution. His theory was proved right, as he and his beliefs played a role in the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made racial segregation in the United States illegal, as well as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which ensured equal access to the right to vote for African American citizens. He was arrested 30 times for his involvement in civil rights activities, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

His marriage to fellow activist Coretta Scott King, was a thing of beauty. In keeping with their beliefs of love, peace, and equality, the pair were an inseparable couple, working, living, and raising their family together until his death in 1968.

Every year we celebrate on the Monday nearest his January 15th birthday. This observation of his birthday became a national holiday in 1983. On this day, we are all encouraged to reflect on our lives and the world we live in, thinking about Dr. King’s principles of peace and love, and how we each play a role in creating a better future.

inspiration thursday: we heart kate moss (it’s her birthday!)

the most iconic model of our time, Kate Moss celebrates her birthday today. we still remember the first whisperings of her name, in 1992, when her soon-to-be-famous demure look, piercing eyes, and uber-thin figure graced Calvin Klein ads. we followed her style throughout the 1990s, when she always seemed to perfectly pull off casual jeans and crop tops, lingerie-inspired dresses, leather jackets, and everything else in between. into the 2000s, she stayed in the limelight, though it was often for her personal life more than her modeling career. but she has always remained an integral part of the fashion world, her sporadic fashion show and advertisement appearances always causing an excitement amongst the community. she released her perfume, Vintage Muse, in 2010.

she turns 40 years old today, and is still as stunning as ever. she was happily married to Jamie Hince in 2011, looking absolutely gorgeous in a flapper-inspired frock and Juliet style veil designed by her close friend John Galliano. in 2012, she released Kate: The Kate Moss Book, showing us her many faces throughout the years. she has a fresh stint as the face of ElevenParis, and made headlines on the cover of Playboy’s 60th anniversary issue this month. still as fabulous as ever!

local style: we heart the 2014 golden globes red carpet

we have a feeling that we are not the only ones who watch the Golden Globes almost exclusively for the red carpet fashions. the entrance is a show in and of itself, each dress an exciting presentation of and actress’s individual style. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were fabulous as hosts once again (and amy was so sweet as she accepted her award for actress in a TV comedy), which of course made it that much more necessary to stick around for the entire show.

as for the clothes, we were thrilled to see lots of bright, bold jewel tones. actresses were simply glowing, and our favorites were the warm palettes: Maria Menounos was gorgeous in BCBG Max AzriaMelissa Rauch was bright and stunning in Romona KevezaLupita Nyong’o wowed us in uniquely modern Ralph Lauren, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus was so elegant in Narcisco Rodriguez.

the colors were not the only winners; classic black and white paired with chic silhouettes for timeless elegance. Megan Mullally looked every bit the sexy librarian in a chic column dress with surprising, yet fabulous, sleeves (we are still wondering who the designer is though…), Jennifer Lawrence pushed the envelope while staying gorgeous, in Christian Dior Couture, Amy Poehler was simply beautiful in Stella McCartney, and we were so excited to see Julia Roberts, who looked breathtaking in subdued Dolce and Gabbana.

our real favorites, though, were the surprising silhouettes, colors, and styles that were fearlessly rocked, and looked just gorgeous on these beautiful actresses. Sandra Bullock’s was amazing in her color blocked, high-low hem dress by Prabal Gurung (apparently critics are calling it a flop, but it is easily our favorite of the night!), Paula Patton was perfectly poised in her uniquely ruffled creation in soft ivory by Stephanie Rolland, Kate Beckinsale was every bit a gorgeous, glittering mermaid in Zuhair Murad, and Tina Fey turned every head in a beautifully printed Carolina Herrera dress with unique 1950s-inspired skirts.

we can easily say that this show did not dissappoint in the fashion department. there wasn’t a single flop, and stars were not afraid to take risks, push the envelope, and have fun. and they all looked just stunning while doing so!
