romance saturday: we heart the longest married couple

we love hearing romantic stories about long-lasting unions and everlasting love. it was so inspiring to see Ann and John Betar, who just celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary. the Connecticut couple were married on November 25, 1932. the two met when Ann was in high school and the two lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut. though she was arranged to be married to a different man, Ann and John eloped to New York together after realizing that they had found true love. “It is unconditional love and understanding” says Ann of their long-lasting marriage. so simple and beautiful!

Ann and John fall short of the Guinness World Record for longest marriage, of Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher, who had been married almost 87 years when Herbert died in 2011.

style spotlight: we heart our luxe satin and tulle flower

we love to layer texture, color, and detail to create beautiful works of art. our luxe satin and tulle flower is one of our favorite new styles that combines some of our favorite elements into one simple and elegant design. our inspiration came as we perused rows and rows of stunning ribbons in all the hues of the rainbow. we knew that we wanted to create something that let the eye-popping shine and rich color really stand out. to do this, we created a piece that is simple in design, layering the fabric with a stretch of our beloved bridal tulle, light and soft, with just a hint of color and texture to play against the ribbon and really let it stand out. softly gathering the layers, we carefully wind each piece into an elegant bloom. each one is a bit different in its beautiful form, paying homage to the handmade nature of each lovely piece. as we love to do, each piece is complete with the addition of a special centerpiece. for our custom bridal looks, we encourage our clients to find one of mom’s or grandma’s heirloom brooches or earrings, to bring “something old” into the special accessory. for our ready-to-wear pieces, we love to find the perfect vintage brooch, sparkly button, or special doodad to complete each work of art. we are creating our new favorite look in a variety of colors, sizes, and finishes for spring. swoon!

inspiration monday: we heart Lady Gaga + Versace

we were so excited to hear the big announcement this weekend… Lady Gaga is the new face of Versace! it makes sense, considering that the songstress is often seen around town in the dramatic label’s goodies; Versace’s Italian roots, namesake gold medallions, over-the-top silhouettes, bondage-inspired lines, and envelope-pushing fashions are always perfect for Gaga. we of course know she’s a big fan of the label, often name-dropping in her tunes; and by now we have all heard Donatella, the songstress’ ode to the queen of the Versace label.

it’s well-known that the fabulous Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace are good friends, often seen around town and at events together, and we love the similarities of their looks, from the dramatic Italian features to the long blonde hair. Lady Gaga definitely channeled Donatella’s style for the spring 2014 Versace ads, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot. we are swooning!

around town: we heart caramel brulee lattes

80956eb4815e44ad95704eb5eb95a98bwe didn’t think we could love Starbucks more than we already do. then they went ahead and introduced their holiday drinks for the season, and the Caramel Brulee Latte changed everything. have you tried it? we are completely smitten over it. definitely for the sweeter palette, and perfect for those of us who prefer “coffee beverages” to a full-on cup of coffee. if you love caramel, then this is perfect for you- not just a hint, but a full-on buttery richness that leads the entire flavor of the drink. this is a return item for them, but one that we didn’t get to try until this year, and we are glad we did! and of course we are also loving the return of their red holiday cups, a tradition that lets us know it’s that time of year! they are festive for 2013, with a pretty palette of reds, gold, and a bit of white in a whimsical and modern snowflake print that is sure to bring on smiles. cheers!

inspiration friday: we heart lucille ball

“I’d rather regret the things I have done than the things that I haven’t.”lucy1

Lucille Ball was definitely not afraid to make an entrance. she was absolutely fabulous, not only as a comedian but as a bold businesswoman who lived her life to the very fullest, pushing limits, taking risks, and all the while having fun. we all know her best for her wacky antics on her show I Love Lucy, where she starred opposite her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz, as a housewife who just couldn’t be kept down. it was a groundbreaking show, not only as the first of its kind starring a mixed-ethnicity couple, but starring characters that constantly inspired audiences to ponder the idea of a relationship that pushed the limits of traditional gender roles. in real life, Lucille Ball also pushed the boundaries of tradition, forming her namesake production company, Desilu, with her then spouse, producing not only their own show, but the original Star Trek series as well as countless others. she was an Emmy winner as well, honored numerous times for her unique comedy and style.

well, speaking of style, yes, she was fabulous in that department, too. the darling redhead was just as sassy as she looked, always ready to make an entrance in her perfectly coiffed red curls and bright red lips. her run as the star of I Love Lucy from 1951 to 1957 showed her in countless looks, but our favorites are of course her trademark collared shirtdresses, perfectly fitted, worn over dainty pumps and topped with a strand of oversized pearls. she was the epitome of 1950s glamour, so effortlessly feminine yet never afraid to get dirty, make silly faces, and have a good time. we do love Lucy!

color theory: we heart raspberry red

the fruit is simply delicious, but the color might even better. like it’s namesake fruit, the raspberry hue is rich, bright, and delectable. a warm hue that often walks the line between red and pink, raspberry is the perfect jewel tone that always stands out in a crowd. festive for the holidays, we love it paired with basic blacks and grays; it also looks completely fierce with metallics silvers and golds. dress it up or dress it down, it always looks great!

joe’s jeans makes amazing classics that always look and feel great- we are loving the new prints and colors they are adding, including the one and only raspberry!

Erin Gallagher’s Anna ring makes us wish our birthdays were in July for an excuse to wear the ruby stone on 14k yellow gold. on second thought, we don’t need an excuse…

H&M’s cute cropped blazer is perfect for fall, winter, and even spring layering. the raspberry hued gem is easily our favorite- can’t you just imagine it with the perfect pair of dark blue skinnies and black boots??

we are still swooning over Kyra Sedgwick’s gorgeous jewel toned Monique Lhuillier beauty that she wore to the 2010 Emmy’s.

Michelle Dockery channeled her inner-1950’s-era goddess with this dramatic red color blocked look from Prada at this year’s Emmy’s.

Gucci’s dramatic leather waist belt is the perfect topper to spice up the LBD for all the holiday parties this year!

Let’s talk about how perfectly necessary Henri Bendel’s Sutton messenger bag is to our current wardrobe…

Laura Mercier makes the loveliest richly hued lip colors, and Raspberry Sorbet is yet another hit, a shade that will look great on all of us!

romance wednesday: we heart marriage equality

today is a historic day in Illinois, as our Governor Pat Quinn will be signing the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act this afternoon at Chicago’s UIC Forum. as of today, Illinois will be the 16th of the 50 states to pass the bill allowing same-sex couples to wed. starting in June 2014, these couples will be able to legally wed and have their marriages recognized as equal to those of heterosexual couples. how exciting that our state is continuing the perpetual motion that our country, and our world, is traveling in towards equality of all individuals despite their sexual identity and orientation.
