inspiration thursday: we heart halloween witches

halloween is one of our favorite days of the year. crisp air. red leaves. the smell of cinnamon and cloves. pumpkin carving. apple cider drinking. magic in the air.

magic is that special something that the autumn season holds, the energy that comes alive on october 31. magic is a special thing, a connection with the earth, a sight and a gift that we look upon with awe and fascination. some of our favorite characters in books, television, and movies are these witches- amazing women who hold this gift, who capture this magic. this halloween, we will be watching our favorite leading ladies make magic, inspiring us in their power, beauty, and style as witches.

Elizabeth Montgomery was perfectly sweet and sassy as Samantha in Bewitched, one of the best shows of the 60s

around town: we heart chicago fashion week

chicago, striving to make a name for itself in new and innovative fashion, began Fashion Focus 9 years ago. the city’s own fashion week was held october 15th through 20th of this year, with stylish events and fashion shows being held around the city. these events are always a great way to see the fresh designs from local designers, get inspired, and enjoy great events at some of the city’s best venues.

on wednesday, october 16, we attended the fabulous Live Out Loud Down the Runway fashion show at the oh-so-chic Nacional 27 in River North, where a few of our favorite local designers and vendors showed off some of their best goodies for the crowd. adorable Consuella from V103 was fabulous as the emcee of the show. Crystal B Designs, Modhanik, and PurposeRosa sent some of their best spring creations down the runway. the looks were bold, bright, and fabulous. the designers had a great time with bright colors and bold silhouettes in their runway looks. we sipped Bonfire Wine (um, it was delicious), and got to see some fabulous styles by Yellow Plum (yes, i wanted everything). the entire event was created to benefit Live Out Loud, a charity for suicide prevention and awareness.

on thursday, october 17, we had a ball at the gorgeous Germania Place in the Gold Coast, where the NextFashion Chicago show was held. we got to shop local designer popup boutiques, sip mixed drinks, and chat with some promising student designers. the show was great, emceed by the sassy Daniella Guzman and Alicia Roman from NBC5, and featuring many emerging designer’s innovative spring collections. there was also a completely badass performance by Corky Siegel, a harmonica-yielding wizard who stole the show with a performance while the models strutted down the catwalk. there was also a great speech by Jonny, the founder of cancer support group Imerman Angels, where cancer patients are matched with survivors who provide encouragement throughout the journey. it was such a fun show!

style spotlight: we heart lace wedding veils

we just love lace- timelessly beautiful, feminine, and regal. whether it is lace detailing on the bottom hem of a wedding dress, or an elaborate lace-covered gown, a simple scalloped lace trim on a wedding veil or a dramatically ornate lace edged veil- it creates an elegant look for brides that has captured our attention for centuries. many laces are still created using hand-crafted techniques that have been passed down for generations, and the detail and pattern in these laces is truly extraordinary. throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, our favorite leading ladies have wowed us in breathtaking lace-adorned bridal looks for their wedding day. Grace Kelly set a trend that is still going strong, in the magnificent lace look designed by Helen Rose for her 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco. Gwen Stefani wore a vintage lace-embellished to complement her stunning pink and white John Galliano-designed dress for her 2002 wedding to Gavin Rossdale. Kate Middleton‘s stunning Alexander McQueen gown and veil were adorned with beautifully delicate lace for her 2011 wedding to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

we love creating lace-edged veils, and love taking on the challenge of re-working an heirloom veil or finding the perfect lace to complement a bride’s wedding dress. each hand made piece stands out as a work of art, with special detail and design that conveys each bride’s personal look and style. Anjali matched her allover lace wedding dress with a beautiful floral alencon lace veil with a modern gathered comb work low in back. (photo: Jessica Purvis Photography). Laura also went with a modern gathered comb for her veil, with wide alencon lace that tapered dramatically to the elbow, complementing her lace bodice dress. (photo: Life on Prints Photography) Kemi’s dramatci cathedral length veil began with a simple scalloped alencon lace that layered into a larger lace at the bottom edge of the piece, matching her lace-overlaid dress beautifully. romance saturday: we heart gwen and gavin

out of the limelight but still cool as ever, we are still obsessed with rocker chic couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale. we have been watching them for years, and love watching not only their sweetly romantic interactions, but also their awesome style evolution. gwen has always been the style maven, of course; from her red lips to her retro glam bleached blonde hair, she has always inspired us. in the 90s, as front-woman for No Doubt, she made Adidas track pants and crop tops chic; over the years she began introducing more femininity, while still keeping a sexy edge. plaids and florals, leather and bows; the girl has done it all, even wowing us in glamorous gowns that lent a princess vibe, but still managed to scream badass cool. all the while, Gavin has been at her side; as front-man of Bush, with his funky, highlighted waves and leather pants, and later on, in elegant suits on the red carpet, and still keeping his rocker vibe with a cool ponytail and cool tees and jackets.

(from left) a young gwen and gavin in 1998, the couple looking retro fabulous out on the town, perfectly coiffed and sweetly affectionate at an event, looking cool in their matching tee and sunglasses lookgwenstefani_gavinrossdale_throughtheyearsas one of our favorite down-to-earth but still absolutely fabulous hollywood couples, we were so excited when Gwen and Gavin got married on January 1, 2002. of course, we were completely excited about the long-time couple finally tying the knot, but more than that, all of of girls were dying to see the style-maker’s dress. we were sure she would go for something completely wild, unexpected, and amazing. we were not disappointed at all with what we saw her in. more tame than one would have expected, yet still amazing, her friend John Galliano struck a beautiful chord with a traditional Dior silhouette in a cinched waist and full, glamorous skirts, but took us to the wild side with a fierce pink ombre on the skirts of the white silk  gown. the unforgettable look was classic gwen cool in a ladylike presentation. the asymmetrical bodice also showed hints of pink in delicate bows at the sleeves. one more traditional cap sleeve on gwen’s left arm was offset by an off-the-shoulder look on the other. she wore a vintage lace-edged veil that completed the fairy princess look, yet her namesake blood red lips and bleached coif paired with the pop of bold pink kept the look funky, fresh, and all-around awesome. swoon!

simpy fabulous: we heart black and white

it never goes out of style, and it always finds  a fresh spin. black and white is an absolute classic, season after season. you can’t go wrong with color blocking white and black separates, or find your favorite print trend of the moment (ours is chevron!) and extend it’s shelf life by going for a black and white scheme.

(clockwise from left) Claudette Colbert inspired us to be fabulous, fun and feisty in It Happened One Night.

we are completely obsessed with Prada‘s Baroque sunglasses in classic black with a decidedly funky twist!

Alexander McQueen never fails to marry elegance with a tongue-in-cheek roughness; in the Knuckle-duster Clutch they deliver once again; this time in black python with gold toned brass knuckles and a crown of pearly beads.

we are totally digging on Rickety Rack‘s awesome line of stylish duds; especially this gorgeous peplum top in of-the-moment chevron in (of course) black and white.

are we the only ones that have been searching high and low for a good pair of leather leggings? well if you are like us, then you found them. J Brand Jeans makes an awesome pair of super skinny leggings that are stretchy, sexy, and comfy. can you believe it?

we have pretty much always wanted to be Madonna. but of all her looks, she does sexy elegance best in 1990’s Vogue.

L.A.M.B. somehow always manages to pull together street style with high fashion. we love this 1940’s throwback vibe pump in black and white leather.

black and white was all over the spring runways during New York Fashion Week, from Desigual‘s whimsical 1960s sheath dresses, to Ralph Lauren‘s modern sexy secretary, to Nicole Miller‘s funky pattern plays.

Kenneth Jay Lane‘s Leopard Print Enamel Necklace has us swooning. a funky oversized collar, in classic black and white, in leopard print… yes, we officially found the world’s perfect necklace.

Balmain‘s fierce black and white boot has pretty much everything we love- a sky-high heel, gorgeous patterns, and textural interest, all pulled together in a timeless black and white scheme that is absolutely delicious.

inspiration wednesday: we heart jackie kennedy, part 2

yesterday we explored jackie kennedy’s stunning style as the first lady between 1961 and 1963; her effortless glamour and sensible elegance created an unforgettable look that inspired a generation of women. unafraid to push the envelope, she perfectly paired simple and fun, classic and modern, softly feminine and no-nonsense business, all for an iconic look that we still look up to today.

jackiekennedy_inspiration_katemiddleton_janellemonae_style(clockwise from left) Kate Middleton’s chic elegance and perfectly accessorized style pays homage to Jackie Kennedy’s flawless look.

Tila March’s Romy clutch in sapphire leather puts a decidedly modern twist on the classic handbag.

J. Crew’s Mollie dress is the perfect little black dress; a day-to-night number that would make Jackie proud.

Jackie’s accessory collection wasn’t complete without her oversized sunglasses; Tory Burch’s Glam glasses are the perfect set for a modern girl.

every girl needs a good set of pearls. these cultured freshwater beauties by Belle de Mer are the perfect addition to your jewelry box.

Janelle Monae is a modern icon, pairing chic black and white pieces in a perfectly balanced mix of masculinity and femininity that harkens to Jackie’s sensibly collared suits.

we love these chicer-than-chic patent leather pumps by Kate Spade; all a girl needs to complete her Jackie Kennedy-inspired wardrobe.

inspiration tuesday: we heart jackie kennedy, part 1

she was one of our most memorable first ladies for a reason. jackie kennedy was simply lovely; but she wasn’t resigned to just the traditional role of her president husband’s silent partner. she was an integral part of john kennedy‘s presidential term; she lent her voice to political and social events throughout the early 1960s. a multi-lingual, highly educated young woman, she traveled extensively, during her term as first lady and also later on, encouraging the preservation of beauty, art, and history, domestically and around the globe.

her quiet strength was inspiring, but her public persona and style was what made jackie kennedy an icon. her simple and chic fashion was refreshing yet tasteful. bold pops of color and fabulous accessories ensured that she always looked amazing, and always stood out in a crowd. she inspired American women to don a-line sheaths, cleanly lined suits, and bright, fresh colors. typically in solids, she sometimes surprised in fun florals. yet she always rocked classic black, too. oversized sunglasses were a staple in her wardrobe. dressed up or down, she was often seen in glamorously oversized pearls. and of course the pillbox hat that she wore crowned upon her perfectly teased bouffant will always be hers.
