we heart new york fashion week

we wait all year for it… the most exciting time for any fashionista. New York Fashion Week!

september 5 – 12 brought whimsy, class, and just enough edge to keep us entertained. the menswear trend coupled with a 40s-era military stiffness in squared shoulders, pinstripes, blazers, and more. but an undeniable feminine elegance kept it fresh and sexy, thanks to cinched waists, a few ruffles and frills, and surprising details like bows and red lips. the basic blacks and whites were not to be missed, while others shone in bright summery hues picked from the vines of fruit trees, interpreted in intricate prints, a great blend of tribal inspiration and classically lovely florals.

and because this cool, rainy day is putting us in the fall spirit, we couldn’t resist but recap some of our fave looks from the fall/winter collections shown earlier this year. the fashions this season are simply inspiring; mixing genres, pushing limits, and surprising us with gorgeous blends of elegance, whimsy, and all-around fabulousness. colors for the season are simply delectable, rich jewel tones balanced with soft neutrals to lighten things up here and there. and the prints and patterns were just stunning- lots of beautiful blooms and art deco-inspired geometrics. check out some of our favorite looks from fall/winter 2013…

we heart grandparents

are you lucky enough to have grandparents? if so, i hope you called them today to say “happy grandparent’s day”!!

i am lucky to say that i have an absolutely fabulous grandmother. my Gagie, or Fran, as she’s known to the rest of the world, has always been quite an inspiration to me; at 88, she is vivacious as ever. she lives independently, and doesn’t let mature age slow her down a bit. just try to stop her from going to pick up a pack of cigarettes, you will see what i mean!

i am always honored when someone tells me i look like her; what a sense of pride to know that i take after such a strong woman; she lived through the depression and world war II, raised a family, always worked hard (her doctor told her she finally needed to retire just a couple years back), and is always there when i want to grab a cup of coffee and kibitz about life.

here’s Gagie and her soul mate, my grandfather Walter, whom i was never lucky enough to meet. she always says, “I was married to your grandfather, and I never wanted to marry again.” this photo was taken in 1972.

and here she and i are together, on my birthday this year. she’s still fabulous!
